DADT has finally been abolished by the Senate. Why it took so long is beyond me, but it finally got passed. President Obama will sign the bill this week. Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, is landmark legislation and removes the stigma of inequality. It's a proven fact that over 70% of Americans believe it to be a serious flaw to our national character. Now, gays and lesbians can be in the military and not be punished or discharged because of their sexual orientation.
Historically, the inequality in the DADT law caused many to be discharged and/or go into hiding. This was no way for our military to live. The fact that many serving as hidden homosexuals lived with an unneeded burden of being "found out" must have been awful. The ones who were punished, by being discharged, faced another burden. The loss of their duty, the job they loved, and the adventure they may've sought was wiped away because of the DADT law. Many, now that the law has been abolished, will re-enlist and hopefully, live within the military system in harmony with the other soldiers, sailors and marines.
It is a good day for the U.S. when our Constitution truly means what we think it means, that all men are created equal. I hope the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell will move us to a more perfect union.
