Today is a sad day and possibly a change of venue in morality in politics. What Congressman Weiner did in his tweeting was unacceptable though not unlike someone focusing on porn 24-7. The way he was treated by colleagues, the media and his enemies was incredibly sad. Today's news conference about his leaving was a circus as was his first news conference last week.
Weiner was guilty and he finally admitted it however you could've heard a pin drop in the Democratic ranks with the lack of support for this guy. He has carried the water for the Dems. for years, fighting for the injustices around and most especially giving his voice in support of the health care law and trudged heavily on the Ryan Budget with threatened to take away Medicare for a voucher system. He was one of the clearly focused voices of the progressives. The Democrats did him a mis-service by not supporting him. Then again, this is typical of the Democrats. When its tough out there, they turn tail and run. Where did all this self-righteousness come from? I thought the Republicans had the market cornered on "morality". Except they seem to be very quiet when it comes to real sexual indiscretions of their party members. David Vitter, a Republican, who sought the services of prostitutes is still in Congress and there seems to be no response from the moral Republicans on him.
Weiner was thrown to the media wolves, especially the sensational, checkbook media types. They abused him verbally and laughed, joked and made snickering comments in their copy whether through blogs, or websites, or cable. Weiner knew what he did and did come forward to admit what he did. For three weeks he was badgered, followed around and ridiculed. Personally, I don't care what anyone does in private. There is no need for me to know as a voter.
It was wise for Weiner to resign. He will be back, I am certain. It is just very sad that what he did, while distasteful, and NOT a crime, grew into this monstrous event and forced a good man out of office.
