Mindful Musings - 8

Well, it appears that the mean Senate Republicans failed to pass the extension of unemployment benefits for those unlucky to be out of work. Three Republican members voted for the extension, while the whole Democratic Congress voted for it as well. It only took four tries to do it!

I understand that the U.S. governments budget is astronomical, but now is not the time to become fiscally sensitive to the deficit or mean and insensitive to the plight of so many Americans.

I do not understand the reasoning of the right. The implication is that the unemployed are parasites living off the government. No doubt there are a few plying the government with erroneous details of their lack of jobs. They are being enabled because of the government's help and according to the right, are not able to think or help themselves.

The left feels that once the checks are distributed, families will be able to buy food, clothing, and pay down rents and mortgages. The extension will give these unemployed people a bit of a respite from the pressures of daily life and the stress of job-hunting. Not only that but the economy will prosper the more they spend.

The market, out there is tough. For every job available, there are at least 7 qualified applicants. One of my friends applied for a job in which 700 applicants applied! You don't pull the rug out from hundreds of thousands of Americans simply because you want to balance the books.

If the right would put as much emphasis on balancing the budget on the two wars, nee, three wars we are fighting (drones to Pakistan) and the amount those wars are sapping from the federal government) then I might agree with prudence toward the deficit. Our military should be cut. Many of our soldiers not only need to return to our soil from Iraq, and Afghanistan, but Pakistan, Okinawa, Germany and all the eastern "stans". We are not the world's police, and the sooner we get out of those places the better, in my opinion.

Republicans, you cut taxes to the rich, started the two wars (as did the Dems.) The deficit tripled under your watch. Get off the backs of average americans. You did a great job! (tongue in cheek)
