Right now, we are suffering from a brutal recession. Americans are generally angry at their own government and are tired of the snail's pace of events. The number one issue is the lack of jobs. The more people are out of work, the worst the venom is directed at the Obama administration and Congress.
Many don't want government "interference" in their affairs. Many think that government should regulate business while others would prefer the government just leave them alone.
We are an opinionated, spoiled, and ill-educated group of people. We rely on TV or the internet to give us an opinion. Many of us can't even think in a critical manner.
All we know is that dad, or mom, or my friend down the street is out of work, and it's the government's fault.
Americans are a fickle bunch. We want the government to fork over checks for social security and medicare or medicaid but we won't have government extend unemployment benefits to those whose benefits have dried up because "we need to tighten our belts", "bite the bullet". All this rhetoric comes from the ignorance of some. Republicans, in Congress and one Democrat cancelled extensions to unemployment benefits while collecting their own paychecks and sauntering off to a long weekend.
Where is the compassion? When did Americans become so greedy, and mean-spirited?
History shows that when the majority of the population has no love of government that population can rise up against that government. When people are hungry, frustrated and depressed because of lack of a reason for living, then anarchy often follows.
It's a sobering thought and quite reasonable to assume that this could happen in the country we love so much albeit of the rose colored glasses.
