Are We All Talking Oil?

Everyone in the U.S. seems to be riveted onto the spewing oil in the Gulf of Mexico. It's a horrible nightmarish scene and no one seems to know what to do about it. So, the blame game takes over. What can be done? Why is it taking so long? BP is responsible, isn't it? No, the U.S. government didn't move fast enough. It's the fault of all oil companies. It's the fault of the car companies who didn't try, in the least, to convert American cars to more efficient-running vehicles.

Europe has had this revelation for over twenty years! Many of their cars get terrific gas mileage, compared to American cars. So, what gives?

Obviously, big oil has been in cahoots with the car industry, and basically listening to the American consumer who lusts after big, gas guzzling vehicles. Of course, this is too simplified. We have to blame our Congress and our Presidents. If you watched Jon Stewart last week, he did a piece showing 8 presidents all trying to reduce our dependence on oil. Amazingly similar in their comments, the 8 presidents, from Nixon to Obama, all touted the fact that we "must get off our dependence for oil". Yes, even Nixon! Stunning, isn't it?

So, what's the answer? We have a huge ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. No one seems to know how to stop the gushing. In the meantime, the destruction continues, both toward the livelihood of residents and the animals that call the Gulf their homes.

If I see another dripping pelican or a drowning fish, I'm going to scream. It is a terrible tragedy and you can bet there is enough blame to go around.
